Neigong¶
What it is: Neigong (內功, nèigōng) means "internal work" or "internal skill" — the deliberate cultivation of the qualities inside movement: structure, relaxation, breath, and attention.
Literal meaning¶
Nei (內) means "internal, inner." Gong (功) means "work" or "skill developed through practice." So neigong is the inner work that underlies the outer movement — the skill you cannot see from outside.
Historical context¶
The term comes from Chinese martial-arts training, where it distinguished internal conditioning (breath, alignment, awareness) from waigong (外功), "external" conditioning (strength, conditioning, striking). Internal practices drew heavily on Daoist breathing and meditation traditions, and neigong became the backbone of the "internal" martial arts, of which tai chi is the most famous.
Traditional interpretation¶
Traditionally, neigong is understood as the cultivation of qi and the refinement of the "three treasures" — Jing, qi, and Shen. The aim is a body that is relaxed yet connected, rooted yet light, and a mind that is calm yet alert.
Modern explanation¶
Neigong is best read today as the invisible training layer: postural alignment, breath control, and attention. These are the mechanisms behind tai chi and qigong's benefits — balance, relaxation, body awareness — and they are observable and testable without any belief in qi.
Strip away the terminology and neigong is three interlocking skills, trained together:
| Skill | What it is | Where it shows up |
|---|---|---|
| Structure | Relaxed, aligned posture; rooting | Balance, stability |
| Breath | Slow, abdominal breathing | Calm, relaxation |
| Attention | Gathered awareness that returns when it drifts | Body awareness, focus |
These are the same three "regulations" as Qigong — body, breath, and mind. Neigong and qigong share the same engine; they differ in emphasis and framing.
Related concepts¶
- Qi — what neigong cultivates.
- Dantian — the center neigong focuses on.
- Tai Chi — the martial art built on neigong.
- Qigong — the health practice that shares its methods.
- Shen — the mind neigong aims to settle.
Common misunderstandings¶
- "Neigong is a secret supernatural power." It is ordinary, trainable body–breath–attention work.
- "Neigong and qigong are completely different." They overlap heavily; neigong is the martial-internal framing, qigong the health framing.
- "You can learn neigong from a book in weeks." It is slow, embodied work — the "gong" (skill) takes years.
