Tai Chi & Qigong for Specific Health Conditions¶
TL;DR — Tai chi and qigong have been studied for a wide range of health outcomes, but the evidence is not uniform. The strongest, most consistent area is balance and fall prevention in older adults. Other areas — including pain, arthritis, blood pressure, mood, sleep, and Parkinson's disease — show encouraging but less consistent evidence. People are often told tai chi is "good for everything." That is not what the evidence says. It is studied for many things, strongly supported for a few, and promising but preliminary for the rest. This page is the honest map.

The strongest evidence: balance and falls¶
The single most consistent finding in the field is that tai chi improves balance and reduces falls in older adults. This is supported by multiple randomized trials and is the area authorities describe with the most confidence. See the dedicated page Tai Chi for Older Adults for the details.
The mechanism is not mysterious: tai chi is continuous, slow weight-shifting with constant attention to posture — which is exactly the kind of training that builds balance and body awareness (see balance and rooting).
Pain, arthritis, and mobility¶
Tai chi has been studied for chronic pain, including low-back pain and osteoarthritis (especially of the knee). NCCIH notes research suggesting tai chi may help reduce pain and improve physical function in people with osteoarthritis. The picture for back pain and mobility is similar: encouraging, with the gentle, graded movement of tai chi offered as a low-impact option.

Blood pressure and heart health¶
Some studies suggest that regular tai chi or qigong practice may be associated with modest reductions in blood pressure. The proposed mechanism is the relaxation response — slowed breathing and reduced sympathetic arousal — which is well documented for breathing practice generally. The evidence is promising rather than definitive, and it does not replace medication or medical care for hypertension.
Neurological conditions: Parkinson's disease¶
NCCIH and other authorities note that tai chi has been studied in Parkinson's disease, where the focus is on balance, stability, and fall prevention — areas where people with Parkinson's often need support. Some studies report improvements in balance and functional mobility. The evidence is promising and actively developing, but tai chi is a complementary practice, not a treatment for the underlying condition.
Fibromyalgia and broader pain¶
Fibromyalgia has also been studied, with some trials reporting symptom relief. This is among the more preliminary areas — fewer and smaller studies — so the honest label is "preliminary." The same applies to some other chronic pain and fatigue conditions where tai chi and qigong have been explored.
Why the evidence is uneven¶
Tai chi and qigong are hard to study rigorously for several reasons:

Historical fact¶
The health applications of tai chi and qigong are largely a 20th-century reframing. Tai chi began as a martial art (see What Is Tai Chi?); its use as a health practice grew alongside the standardized 24-form of 1956 and the modern health-qigong movement.
Traditional interpretation¶
Traditionally, health is understood through balance and the smooth circulation of qi — an idea captured in the concept of yang sheng ("nourishing life"). Practice aims to restore the body's natural equilibrium, which is the traditional lens on many of the outcomes above.
Modern explanation¶
The modern reading maps each outcome onto observable mechanisms: slow movement and weight-shifting for balance, the relaxation response for blood pressure and stress, graded low-impact movement for pain and mobility, and settled attention for sleep and mood.
